The printer’s face as a brand touchpoint
When we introduced the first MakerBot product after the Ultimaker and MakerBot merger into UltiMaker, the front of the printer suddenly had more to say than just a name. In a busy classroom or lab, the “face” of the printer needed to signal continuity for existing MakerBot users while also pointing to a new visual identity. For this desktop 3D printer, I developed a dedicated product logo based on the new brand mark, refining its proportions, weight, and spacing so it works at a small scale on the printer’s front. Working with the product team, I defined its precise placement and its relationship to nearby edges and openings, so the mark feels integrated into the hardware rather than applied on top. The result is a calm, confident printer face that users can recognize and trust at a glance – and a clear brand touchpoint for the first post-merger release under the MakerBot name.
